Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (YISW, Donetsk Region) and Public Joint Stock Company, Krasnodon Coal (Lugansk Region), part of the METINVEST group [owned by oligarch Rinat Akhmetov ‒ed.], and located on the territory temporarily outside of Ukrainian control [the official Ukrainian designation of the DPR and the LPR ‒ed.] ceased production due to ongoing military activity and the blockade of railway communications in the ATO zone.
This was reported by the company’s press service.
Since the commencement of hostilities in the region, YISW has operated under conditions of irregular supply of iron ore. After protestors blocked traffic on the railway line Yasinovataya‒Skotovataya, the import of raw materials and the export of finished products has become impossible.
“At the moment, preparatory work for temporary mothballing has been completed at Yenakievo Steel Plant. A blow-out has been performed at blast furnaces no.3 and no.5, and the basic oxygen furnace shop has ceased operating. Production at the Makeevka branch will be halted on February 25,” according to a statement.
Furthermore, due to the blockade of railway communication, operations have ceased at all mines of the Krasnodon Coal concern.
METINVEST is the largest mining and metallurgical concern in the Ukraine. Member companies of the group are mainly based in the Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhiye and Dnepropetrovsk Regions.
METINVEST is a vertically integrated group of mining companies that manages assets at each stage of the production [and distribution ‒ed.] chain, from iron ore and coal mining and coke production, to production of semi-finished and finished rolled steel and steel pipe products, as well as in other products of high added value. Thr group consists of mining and metallurgical enterprises in the Ukraine, in Europe and in the USA and has a sales network covering all key global markets.
